It scarcely seems possible that this time next week we’ll be settling down to watch The 148th Open which is being held at Royal Portrush – always a highlight of the golfing year and with the new season schedule, it’s unbelievably the last Major of the year! |
The 148th Open
So who do we think will come out on top, for what it’s worth here’s the wisdom and experience from John and Jude, two of our PGA Pros.
|
| According to John (who seems to be hedging his bets slightly)
“I am biased but Justin Rose is still at his peak and putting as well as he ever has. While Tommy Fleetwood's has come of age and is ready to hit the big time and grew up playing links golf."
|
| Meanwhile a certain Tiger is getting Jude’s vote...
"Tiger Woods - I think he's preparing for the Majors and I think this is his Penultimate Open Championship ( I could be wrong, but I think he said 2020 at St.Georges is his last time of travelling to play)”
|
|
John and Jude aren’t just amateur tipsters though, they are also great coaches and regularly receive great feedback like this - Sue has been having lessons with Jude and has seen her handicap reduce from 24 to 20!
“Wednesday in the Coronation Cup final was really good. I won 4&3 but the biggest change was on 12th where I got a 5 and missed the trees and on the 13th I got a par 3 but just missed the hazard so was still a tad right but it didn't go out of bounds. So as you can imagine I am very pleased. Thank you for all your help and looking forward to the 19th and the next lesson." Meanwhile, John gave Ross his initial consultation at the beginning of the week and this was the result:
"Hi John, I just wanted to say I’ve just had one of the best range experience that I can remember, not only was I striking the ball well but I now have a draw forming. I know its early stages and I won’t get too carried away but just wanted to say a big thank you for a great start and a way of me finding the love for the game again. Many thanks"

Short Game Clinic Back due to popular demand, John will be holding another clinic on the short game, this will be on Saturday, 20th July at 10.30am-12.30pm, featuring pitching, chipping and bunker play. ONLY £20 per person.
John will be showing you how to achieve a better understanding of each shot, where you might be going wrong in your game and also inspire you with some different ideas around the green to make the most of your game and to make it easier for you.
|
|
If you have not been before he is sure you will enjoy the experience and you will be able to take away from the session some great points to help your game this season, and if you have been before, then it will serve as a good reminder for the season ahead.
To book your place on the clinic please either contact the pro shop, contact John by email on john@manstongolf.co.uk or just give him a call on 07930 715487. He looks forward to seeing you there. |

Playing out of the sand is tricky enough without complicated rules getting in the way. Fortunately, golf’s hierarchy rewrote the rule book (literally) and from January this year we've been able to do a few things in the sand that we never could before. |
So, what are these new-fangled rules and what do you still need to watch out for in order to avoid a penalty? |
What you CAN do: - Touch or move loose impediments in a bunker (local rule previously)
- Touch the sand with your hand away from the ball
- Ground the club in the sand away from the ball as long as you're not testing the sand
|
What you CAN’T do: - Deliberately touch the sand to test its condition
- Ground the club next to the ball when playing the shot
- Touch the sand on a practice swing
- Touch the sand when making your backswing
