Jordan Spieth...the putting machine or is he?

Those of you that may have watched the 2017 Open Championship would have seen this year’s champion Jordan Spieth holing lots of putts, and the commentators saying how good of a putter Spieth is. If you look at his stats on the Tour average, he isn’t as spectacular as you may think.

Jordan Spieth's putting ranking today:

• 37th in strokes gained putting.
• 130th on one putts inside 5'.
• 146th on one putts of 5'-10'. 
• 166th on one putts from 10'-15'.
• 125th on one putts from 15'-20'.
• 47th on one putts from 20'-25'.
• 54th on one putts from outside 25'. 

However if you look at his approach averages, Jordan Spieth is ranked very high in the averages. These averages will give him lots of birdie and eagle chances from close range, and therefore the closer you are to the hole, the more chance you will have of holing the putt.

Approach shots gained stats:

• 1st in proximity to the hole.
• 2nd in greens in regulation.
• 3rd from 175-200 yards.
• 3rd from 150-175 yards.
• 2nd inside 100 yards.
• 2nd inside 200 yards.

What does it take to get approaches closer to the hole?

You need to know how far you hit each club. You may have a GPS device that tells you the distance to the hole, but if you do not know how far you hit each club in terms of carry distance, then you are guessing. The top tour pros will know exactly the carry distance of every club in the bag; this will give them the ability to hit shots closer and getting the ball ‘pin high’ is key to good approach play.

How do you work out how far each club goes?

Club Championship

Last weekend saw the Club Championship being played over 36 holes, 18 Saturday and 18 Sunday.

It was a very successful weekend for Ian Baker, after two very solid rounds of golf, he followed a nett 59 day one with a matching 59 day two to claim first in the nett prize with David Jupp finishing a further two shots back after the lowest nett score of 58.

In the gross section, Ian Baker again was triumphant with two very solid 76s. Paul Bunyon who lead by two shots after day one had to settle for second place. Well done to all the members that took part.

Max and Gavin in action...

This week saw both Max and Gavin in action on Thursday at St Augustine’s Pro-am. The weather was extremely windy and conditions were extremely tough. Gavin in only his second start as a professional shot a tidy 67, and would have been a lot better if he didn’t hit it out of bounds on the 18th.

Max continued his recent good form after a second place finish in the better ball qualifier with a round of 60, and two fourth place finishes with rounds of 65 and 68. He set the pace teeing off first, managing to shot a solid 64 with seven birdies and take home the winners cheque. Well done to both professionals. Both are in action in the coming weeks stay tuned for their progress.
