Juniors on the course!

Our juniors are going from strength to strength in the weekly coaching sessions with PGA Professionals Keely Chiericato and Benj Vernon, and as an addition to their weekly sessions Benj will take them onto the golf course to put their skills up to the test.

The "on the course" sessions will help the juniors' understanding of course management and golf course etiquette. The golf course will test the juniors' skills and show there is more to golf than hitting balls on a range!

They will play off 'age appropriate' tees to build confidence and experience making pars and hopefully birdies! The next session will be held on Sunday, 16 November from 1pm-2:30pm at a cost of £10pp.

What are the Greenkeepers up to?

As many of you will have noticed this week our greenkeeping team have been busy vertidraining the greens on the short game area and golf course. We know golfers don't particularly enjoy putting on greens that have been recently vertidrained as the roll isn't as true as normal, so we thought we should let you know why it is so important we carry this out.

A verti drain machine like this punches small holes in the green to a depth of 9 inches. This allows an exchange of gasses in the soil allowing carbon dioxide out and oxygen in - encouraging healthier deeper root growth. It also promotes better absorption of water for quicker drying putting surfaces. If we didn't verti drain, the greens would become soft and spongy and prone to disease, as well as being less playable in the Winter. Having done this we can now look forward to all year round well paced greens.

What are our Pros Up to?

Over the coming weeks our pros will be travelling to various places to compete in tournaments! Keely, Max and Benj have all been fine-tuning their games to compete!

Tuesday, 11 November saw Max and Benj travel to Surrey to play at Hankley Common for the PGA Winter Series. Hankley Common is one of the top courses in the UK and is host to Open Qualifying, so they knew it would be tough, but what made this course even harder was the heavy rain and wind! Max returned a solid 72 to finish in 8th place, which is not bad considering this included a double bogey as well as a double hit! Whereas Benj had a harder day on the course and returned a 79! But started with two double bogeys to make it even tougher!

I'll try to keep you posted on how the three of them get on!
